It's never an easy road to reach the state championship in high school football in Mississippi.

In West Point, the Green Wave are not afraid to load up the non-district schedule to get ready for what the district has to offer.

After West Point participates in a jamboree against Brandon on August 19, it takes on defending champions in back-to-back weeks to open the season. The Green Wave travel to Class 4A champion Louisville on August 25, then host Class 6A title holder Starkville on September 1.

West Point will make the trip to take on Noxubee County, which played in the Class 3A championship game, on September 8, before hosting Neshoba Central on September 15.

There will be a scheduled open date for the Green Wave on September 22 and travel to take on Tupelo in one final non-district game on September 29.

The Class 5A, Region 1 slate begins for West Point against Corinth at home on October 6, then it travels to Clarksdale on October 13, holds homecoming against Lafayette on October 20, hosts Pontotoc on October 27 and makes the trip to New Hope to close the regular season on November 2.

The Green Wave will get back on the field in August after coming up short in last year's Class 5A State championship game 31- 21 to Picayune.

“We're going to keep on working until we get our goal and get back at it next year,” West Point head coach Chris Chambless said after the state title game. “We are going to keep grinding toward one goal.”

The Green Wave shut out Vicksburg 14-0 to capture the Class 5A North State title last season and finished with a record of 11-3.
