Green Wave outscores Commodores

DTL Staff Reports

OXFORD – It appears that the West Point Green Wave used the open date to sharpen up the offensive unit.

In a high-scoring encounter to open Class 5A, Region 1 play, West Point did the most damage with a 59-35 road victory over the Lafayette Commodores.

The Green Wave evened up their record at 2-2.

After the West Point defense was able to get a three and out against Lafayette to start the game, the Green Wave scored the first points of the game when Keyshawn Henley found paydirt from 6 yards out with 9 minutes remaining in the first quarter.

The Commodores tied the game at the 7:37 mark of the first quarter, but

West Point jumped back in front 13-7 with a score by Kahnen Daniels.

Lafayette was able to gain a 14-13 advantage with another touchdown with 1:35 left in the first quarter.

Daniels scored his second touchdown of the first half and Que Tillman-Evans added the two-point conversion to put the Green Wave up 21-14. West Point would not trail again in the game.

As did Daniels, Henley crossed the goal line for the second time in the first half at the 6-minute mark of the second quarter as the Green Wave stretched the spread to 27-14.

Touchdown No 3 for Daniels came with 4:08 left in the second quarter and West Point held a 33-14 lead.

After the Commodores scored to cut the margin to 33-21 at the 3:10 mark,

Daniels found the end zone for the fourth time and the Green Wave established a 41-21 advantage with 2:24 remaining in the second quarter. That was the score at the half.

Henley struck again for the third time in the game as West Point began to pour it on at 47-21 with 8:49 remaining in the third quarter.

With 6:25 left in the third, Lafayette scored to close the gap slightly to 47-28.

A 40-yard touchdown run by Tillman-Evans and a score by Ahmari Cox gave the Green Wave a comfortable 59-28 lead with 2:43 left in the third quarter.

The Commodores put one more touchdown up, but could not overcome the huge deficit.

West Point will go on the road again next week to take on New Hope.
