Linda Young speaks at Rotary about the West Point Dog Park

By DAVID SMITH Daily Times Leader

Linda Young, an integral part of the West Point Dog Park, spoke at the West Point Rotary Club at their regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday afternoon. Young spoke about the need for a Dog Park in West Point, referring to how Starkville and Columbus have successful dog parks, and that there is a need for one here.

"We are extremely fortunate to have the city donate us this land to use for the dog park," Young said. The parks and recreation department of the City of West Point will be responsible for the upkeep of the area.

The Dog Park has a goal of $30,000 in donations, which will be used to build and set up the land, making it ready for the community. As of Thursday, there were $14,200 in donations, and this number continues to climb.

Young stated that any funding that they have left over will be donated to the animal shelter to assist them.

"In town, dogs can't run free, and when they do, they're doing their business in someone else's yard and disturbing other people," Young said. "This is really for the people that want to get out and run free and meet other people that love dogs. That's pretty much the premise behind this."

The park will not only be

used as an open area for dogs to safely roam and play with other dogs, but it is also expected to be used as an area to educate citizens in responsible dog ownership.
