Oak Hill Academy’s Williams enjoys nice week at U.S. Amateur Four-Ball

By DANNY P. SMITH

West Point has a record-breaking golfer doing big things in Birmingham, Alabama.

Oak Hill Academy's Wells Williams teamed up with Carter Loflin to establish an 18-hole scoring mark at the seventh annual U.S. Amateur FourBall Championship last Saturday at the Country Club of Birmingham.

That hot start was enough to give Williams and Loflin momentum to advance into Monday's match play round, then they picked up a 6 and 4 win in the round of 32.

"We've been playing real good,” Williams said after Monday's action. “We're just out there playing our game. It's been fun.”

After Saturday's opening round was briefly interrupted by a late-afternoon thunderstorm, it was William and Loflin causing a little bit of thunder and lightning with their 9-under-par 61 on the 6,661-yard East Course for the scoring record.

The previous mark of 62 had been achieved by nine sides with the most recent by three sides in the 2021 championship at Chambers Bay and The Home Course.

A successful putting game was what led to the record-breaking surge for Williams and Loflin. They started by making five consecutive 3's with four birdies and a par.

As sizzling as their golf was, Williams believes it could have been even better.

“We were 9-under through 11 holes,” Williams said. “That was kind of like insane. We were really sitting there thinking we were going to get to within 13 or 14-under. We didn't play too great coming in, but it had the potential to be the USGA scoring record by four (strokes).”

Williams and Loflin followed their record-setting day by carding a 4-under 67 on the 7.166-yard par-71 West Course on Sunday to advance to match play. Williams earned co-medalist honors for his performance.

Their 6 and 4 victory in the round of 32 on Monday came against twins and New Mexico State teammates Trey and Tyler Diehl.

Once this week of golf is over, Williams and Loflin will go their separate ways to begin a college career. Williams will be headed to Vanderbilt, while Loflin plans to play at Georgia.

The two have been friends for 10 years.

"I've known him forever so we have a pretty good relationship,” Williams said.
